Project Brief

For this project, we started by Interviewing ShapeScale. This allowed us to Journey Map and focus on the path we wanted to take during this process. Once we had an idea of who they were we started our research process with a Comparative and Competitive Analysis. We then moved into creating a Business Analysis where we uncovered the Business Goals. We also went through a Card Sorting process created Survey Question’s and started our User Interview/Prep. We then took the insights from the surveys and interviews and did Affinity Mapping to get to know the user’s needs better. This gave us an idea of the Problem Statement, User Scenarios, Persona, create a Storyboard, and User Flows. Once we knew what the user wanted we wrote a Design Hypothesis and focused on Site mapping. Lastly, we started working on making the design official by Sketching, Designing Low/Medium fidelity wireframes, User Testing, High fidelity wireframes, Designing the second iteration, User Testing again, and designing a third Iteration

Analyze ShapeScale and Their Competitors

Comparative Analysis

During our comparative analysis process, we analyzed seven of the most popular fitness apps on the market today. Our objective was to discover the similarities in these apps designs that we could incorporate into ShapeScale’s new app. We mainly noticed that all of these apps have scrollable calendars at the top of the main page that allows the user to compare their progress between days. We also noticed that all of these apps have their global navigations at the bottom of the page and the user’s objective centered. These apps also encourage the user to exercise by showing them the last time they did so which motivates the user and reminds them. The apps also go through an onboarding process to find the perfect workout plan for each user making the app feel more personal. Lastly, these apps discreetly provide the user with information that ultimately guides them to their end goal.

Competitive Analysis

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Find ShapeScale Users and Their Persona

User Interview Insights

User 1

Into body image and said he has body dysmorphia, Competitive, Actively tries lots of health tech, Cares about sleep performance. Only interested in seeing differences in the heat-mapping

User 2

Measures her performance with only how she feels. It would be interesting to have a daily pop-up to see if they are happy or sad and kept track of that.

User 3

More into health than fitness, Wants to be healthy and alive to support her kids, Wants to be a good example for her kids, Wants to see future self. No one so far has said they are big into goal-setting, Measures goals by internal satisfaction

User 4

Into health and fitness for longevity. Wants to keep up with his kids as they grow up. Not huge on goal setting but just wants more for himself. Wants to be a good example for his kids as well. He wants to see how he is internal etc and not just be focused on his body.

User 5

Very into tech especially tech that is related to fitness. Feels that he does not always use the tech he buys but likes to see improvements. Likes simplicity, just wants to know certain things. Wants to be healthy due to his older age and COVID. Very health-focused.

User 6

Likes to stick to routines if she can and wants to have the ability to track them throughout her life. Does not care much about design but likes simplicity and ease of use (such as automatic check-in and minimal features. Does not necessarily have goals just goes based on how she feels and looks.

User 7

Super goal-oriented, Likes goals because they make him feel good about himself, Likes having stories to tell, Likes numbers but also realizes they can be demotivating, Enjoys social functions of fitness apps, Prefers having the freedom to set his own goals

Affinity Mapping

Screen+Shot+2021-02-19+at+12.37.04+PM.jpg

During our affinity mapping process, we started by gathering everything discussed during our user interviews. We wrote them down onto digital sticky notes on Miro and categorized them into 6 categories being Goals & Motivation, App Likes & Dislikes, Persona, Measurements, Tech, and Parking Lot. We then made subcategories in order to truly filter down to the most important things for the user. This gave us an understanding of the similarities all of our users share and what may be important to have in the app for them.

Survey Results

During our survey process, we made two surveys one related to fitness and the other related to tech. Our primary objective was to discover What motivated and inspired people to involve themselves in tech and fitness as well as how they could intertwine. We received around 81 responses in total and discovered that people mostly exercised a few times a week, weighed themselves once a week, judged their health based on how they look in the mirror (due to the lack of accuracy from scales measuring muscle vs fat) and set obtainable goals for themselves to motivate them. We also gathered that people use tech and fitness apps for motivation and to stay up to date with the latest and greatest.

Persona

Screen+Shot+2021-02-19+at+12.08.27+PM.jpg

The Excited Exerciser is pumped to exercise every day for the reward of feeling good physically. They mostly use general feeling to track their progress, but they do like having numbers to validate that feeling. They believe that ShapeScale will be the best fitness aid with its visually-appealing models and tracking of muscle versus fat.

User:

Scenario

  • Seeking a long life

  • Working out

  • Pretty confident about improvement, but not certain

  • Worried about muscle vs. fat

  • Sees ShapeScale as convenient/fun opportunity

Problem Statement

Our user is active and in good shape. They enjoy using fitness apps and tech-related fitness that can help motivate them to reach their goals through reminders and detailed information related to their weight gain/loss and heart rate. Unfortunately, they find the ability to accurately see the amount of fat they are turning to muscle and vice versa impossible. Because of that, they are looking for accurate measurements of their fat and muscle gain and loss as well as other detailed measurements of their body.

Design Hypothesis

We will prioritize displaying a photorealistic 3D model of the user’s body labeled with information useful to the user, primarily including localized fat, localized muscle, and the changes in these metrics over time. The user will be able to access this model almost immediately upon opening the app. We found that ShapeScale’s unique photorealistic model and measurement capabilities excite our target user above anything else, so featuring the model on the app should engage the user both immediately and continually. We will also prioritize setting up short-term goals over long-term goals, as 100% of the beta testers we interviewed indicated that they disliked setting long-term goals.

Next Steps

Accessibility

We would like to focus on making the new ShapeScale app more accessible for people with disabilities.

Size It to be Android Friendly

We would make the app accessible to all platforms starting with androids.

Optimize Our Design

Moving forward we would continue to optimize the design of the app with the user in mind.

Gamify the Process of Reaching Goal

Gamifying the app would make the process more enjoyable for the user and encourage them to reach their goals.
